FORT LUX
During the
months of June and July 2000, the IJmuiden Island Fort was renamed "Fort
Lux". The core of this project was an exhibition of contemporary art in
and around the fort, featuring artists from various countries who work with
light, sound, projections, video and photography. They are drawing their
inspiration from the building itself, its surroundings and from the
historical, economic and social aspects of the region around the mouth of the
North Sea Canal.
The Fort
At the mouth of the North Sea Channel, which connects Amsterdam to the
world, lies an island with an underground fort of concrete corridors and
chambers. The fort, called Fortress IJmuiden was built between 1880 and 1887
as the first and largest work in the Defence Line of Amsterdam. This Defence
Line consisted of a ring of fortresses, fortifications and hydraulical works
such as locks, dams and dikes, layed out in a circle around Amsterdam. In
times of crisis a large area outside the defence ring could be flooded thus
creating a formidable barrier for enemy forces.

Gedurende de
maanden juni en juli 2000 heette Forteiland IJmuiden 'Fort Lux'. De kern van
het project vormt een hedendaagse tentoonstelling in en rond het fort met
kunstenaars uit verschillende landen die werken met licht, geluid,
projecties, video en fotografie. Het gebouw zelf, de omgeving waarin het zich
bevindt en de historische, economische en sociaal-maatschappelijke context
die de regio rond de monding van het Noordzeekanaal vertegenwoordigt vormden
het uitgangspunt van hun werken.
Het Fort
Forteiland IJmuiden is een bunker op een eiland in de monding van het
Noordzeekanaal daterend uit 1880. Het bouwwerk maakt deel uit van de Stelling
van Amsterdam. In 1995 is besloten Fort IJmuiden onder andere een culturele
bestemming te geven.
