‘Life
By Life’
Single channel video 3.40 min. 1988
The videotape begins with a shot
as is shown alongside. At the temple, next to the eye, the skin moves
rhythmically to the beating of the hart. Gradually the picture with
the fish is mixed through, in which the gill of the fish is moving
simultaneously with the temple. The moment picture one has been replaced
by picture two, the knife falls and we see a stationary picture of
the cut off fish-head. The sound of the heartbeat has now been replaced,
in the same rhythm, by the ticking of a clock. Sound and picture of heartbeat,
knife and clock, are varied rhythmically, leading to complex audiovisual
structures.
